My Personal Mission
To help people grow and thrive independently. I always say, “Don’t follow the job; follow the passion.” For me, it’s been a continuous journey throughout my life to help others. My goal is to make a positive change in people’s lives and to achieve personal growth through the implementation and management of goals.
Career Journey
  • Royal Australian Navy: I spent seven years serving in the Royal Australian Navy, where I developed a strong sense of discipline and commitment.
  • Fitness Industry: After my service, I transitioned to the fitness industry, operating a successful personal training business. This phase of my career was driven by my passion for health and wellness and still continues to be.
  • Academic Pursuits: At 30 years old, I embarked on a new journey by starting my psychology degree, which I completed at 38 while working full-time. This academic pursuit allowed me to deepen my understanding of human behaviour and support.
  • Capable Life: As the owner of Capable Life, I am dedicated to empowering neurodiverse individuals through personalised, goal-oriented support.
  • Behaviour Support Practitioner: Currently, I am also developing my practitioner skills in behaviour support with Ability Consultants, further enhancing my ability to provide effective support and advocacy.
What Called Me to This Mission
Several questions emerged from my interactions with parents of neurodiverse children:
  • Future Support and Advocacy: What will happen when I am no longer there to provide support? Who will advocate for my son or daughter when I can’t be there?
  • Skill Preparation for Life: How can I prepare my son or daughter with the skills they desperately need?
  • Keeping Pace with Change: How can my son or daughter keep up with the ongoing changes in skills needed due to technological advancements in the fast-paced world?
  • Independent Living: How can my son or daughter thrive independently and build the confidence they need to trust they can navigate life on their own?
  • Community Savvy: How can I make my son or daughter savvy about accessing community resources and driving their own goals?
  • Service Gaps: Why have organisations failed to provide services that speak to my son or daughter’s strengths, preferred communication styles, and motivational needs?
My Vision
These questions highlighted the need for a tailored approach to supporting neurodiverse individuals. It’s important to understand that neurodiverse individuals are not a homogeneous group; each has unique strengths, challenges, and capacities, especially as they transition into adulthood. Just as the NDIS is reforming into a needs-based system, I sought to deliver individualised support in life skills development. Existing life skills programs often turn into group-centred experiences with inconsistent lessons and haphazard training, missing the mark on person-centred delivery. I envisioned my role as a coach, teacher, mentor, and advocate, requiring a comprehensive understanding of goal facilitation in a world where clear, individualised goals are crucial. The question I posed to myself was: Could I be the professional that builds the bridge to fostering independence in a new way?
Capable Life Mission and Vision
Capable Life was developed to meet the need for a 1:1 independence skill set program tailored to each individual. My passion for helping people inspired me to build custom lesson plans, collaborate frequently with guardians, and share a new discourse about goals.
Our Approach:
  • Tailored Lesson Plans: We create custom lesson plans that cater to the unique needs and strengths of each participant.
  • Guardian Collaboration: Frequent collaboration with guardians ensures a cohesive support system and shared goals.
  • Goal Setting and Achievement: We use a new approach to goal setting, combining various skills and measuring them in ways that highlight participants’ strengths and areas for development.
Innovative Practices:
  • Goal report: Our reports evolve with the process of engagement, review, and recommendations upon goal completion. We celebrate achievements and ensure continuous improvement.
  • SMART Goals: While the SMART process (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) is our foundation, we offer a comprehensive network of participant-professional engagement that is unique in the current service delivery domain.
Commitment to Excellence:
This mission is my calling, and I am dedicated to helping neurodiverse individuals achieve independence and thrive. Through Capable Life, we aim to provide unparalleled support and advocacy, empowering our participants to lead fulfilling and independent lives.
